Past Winners of the Epsom Derby
Epsom Derby Past Winners
The Epsom Derby never fails to thrill and inspire with some exciting winners over the years and this is reflected in the huge worldwide interest in what is one of the most famous and prestigious horse races in the world. This race has been held every year since 1780 and as the most highly-regarded of the five classics, it attracts the very best race horses. This is one of the UK’s greatest sporting events and it attracts a huge worldwide audience, many referring to the contest as the “Blue Riband” of the turf.
For a great number of years the Derby was held on either a Wednesday or a Thursday and it would attract massive crowds from London, not only for the horse racing on offer but also for the huge fair and other entertainment being held on Epsom Downs. Indeed while tickets quickly sell out for the main grandstands and terraces, the hill inside the course is free to enter with a fairground in operation and as such, crowds regularly top the 100,000 mark.
The Derby itself takes place on a left-handed track over a distance of 1 mile 4 furlongs and 6 yards (2,420m) and it is open to three-year-olds excluding geldings. The prize purse as of 2023 is £1,604,000 making it the richest race in Britain and one of the richest in Europe.
The first ever winner of the Epsom Derby was Diomed in 1780, ridden by Sam Arnull and trained by R.Teasdale.
