This promises to be an extremely competitive Derby and we take a look at some of the main contenders for the prize.
(Odds correct at time of writing)
Auguste Rodin – 4/1
Auguste Rodin is a high-class juvenile and he very much looked like the perfect Derby horse when signing off last term with a highly impressive and dominant win in a Grade 1 at Doncaster. This runner is well thought of by handler Aidan O’Brien who, with either Derby winners to his name, is the most successful trainer in the contest’s history. Auguste Rodin was somewhat underwhelming in the 2000 Guineas, however travel disruption may well have played a part here. His preparation for the Derby appears to have gone more smoothly and he represents a stable that is enjoying some blistering form right now.
Military Order – 5/1
Military Order is a very progressive colt who impressed when following up a novice triumph at Newbury with a win in the Lingfield Derby Trial in his last outing. The track at Lingfield didn’t play to Military Order’s strengths and as such, it was even more impressive that he got the job done. It’s somewhat hard to gauge exactly where his limitations are although he won’t be wanting the ground to be too ,much on the quick side on Saturday afternoon.
Passenger – 7/1
Having enjoyed a successful debut at Newmarket in the Wood Ditton last month, Passenger came in a length-and-a-half third in the Dante at York after being sent off as favourite, some trouble in running denying him the prize here. He represents the 2022 Derby winning jockey and trainer combination and connections have forked out the £85,000 supplementary fee required to get him into the line-up on Saturday afternoon.
