Sea Scout Shocks in Blue Riband Trial to Keep Derby Hopes Alive
Longshot Lands Major Blow at Epsom
There was a major surprise in the Listed Blue Riband Trial at Epsom as Sea Scout, sent off at odds of 40-1, stormed into Derby contention with a gutsy head victory over Trinity College. The result, which came following a stewards’ inquiry, keeps the dream alive for connections hoping for glory on June 7.
Ridden confidently by Harry Davies, the Sea The Stars colt made his move inside the final furlong, edging ahead despite late pressure. Trinity College, on his first appearance at Epsom, veered left in the closing stages, triggering the post-race investigation.
Stewards’ Inquiry Clears the Way
The result stood after scrutiny from the stewards, with Sea Scout maintaining the win despite some interference between the top two finishers. The victory marks a significant step forward for the colt, who signed off his juvenile campaign with a maiden success at Lingfield.
Following the shock win, William Hill slashed Sea Scout’s odds for the Derby from 66-1 to 33-1, as the Crisford yard now dare to dream of their first win in the historic Classic.
Davies at the Double
It was a memorable day for Harry Davies, who went on to complete a double aboard City Of Delight in the City and Suburban Handicap. The David Menuisier-trained four-year-old, who returned with a victory at Doncaster earlier this season, produced a powerful late surge to win by half a length.
The success sets up a likely return to Epsom for the gelding on Oaks day, where he will look to continue his fine run of form.
Family Honour for Egan in Historic Handicap
There was also joy for David Egan, who emulated what his father John Egan had come close to achieving, as Asgard’s Captain romped home in the Great Metropolitan Handicap.
Twelve months on from finishing in third position in the Northern Dancer Handicap in last year’s Derby Day card under John Egan, the five-year-old went two places better under David, powering four and a half lengths clear of Master Builder, the race favourite and another trained by Menuisier.
Running off the same 84 mark, Asgard’s Captain left nothing to chance this time, providing a fitting family milestone in one of the sport’s oldest races.
